The All Progressive Congress (APC) has stated it's praying that Joshua Dariye, who picked the nomination form to contest for a seat in the National Assembly within the 2019 elections, receives state pardon.
Dariye, who's currently serving a 14-year prison time period over financial misdeeds, even as he was Plateau nation governor, obtained the nomination form via proxy some days ago.
Noting his “importance” to the party, APC also stated it had no right to deny him the form, even while in prison.
Chindo Dafat, APC publicity Secretary in Plateau, told NAN that “anyone might be within the clinic or jail and pick a nomination form from there. We have no right to disclaim everybody a nomination form. Even INEC cannot stop Dariye from contesting the 2019 elections.
“there may be no regulation that prevents him from buying the form. Whoever comes for the nomination form can get it. I see it as a constitutional right. It's the court that can disqualify him.”
Dafat also confirmed that Dariye had completed the form and submitted, noting that he's to contest with 3 others — Zakari Dimka, Sam Piwuna and Manji Pompori — for the APC ticket.
He stated: “sure, Sen. Dariye has picked a nomination form to seek for a 3rd term. It's far real. He's amongst those jostling for the APC ticket in Plateau critical.
“His (Dariye’s) ward secretary got here and signed the form on his behalf. It's been filled and his supporters are already campaigning ahand of the party's primary election.
“apart from possible success in the appeal, we are also praying for a state pardon. This is some other possibility.
“Dariye is very important to our party, lamentably, this happened to him. It is not that we cannot win elections without him; we can win without him, however he has done a lot and is well loved by his people.
“If Dariye wins elections from prison, he will not be the first Nigerian to try this. Iyiola Omisore from Osun, aslo won a senate seat at the same time as in prison.”
