National Assembly approved N53.239 billion for security agencies in 2019 elections.

The two chambers of the National Assembly yesterday approved the sum of N53.239 billion for security agencies for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

The approval was sequel to the adoption of the reports of the Committees on Appropriations chaired by Sen Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe) and Rep Mustapha Bala Dawaki (APC, Kano) respectively.

The Senate had last week approved the sum of N189.2bn for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the elections.

With the approval of the N53.239bn‎, the total sum approved for both INEC and security agencies for the conduct of the polls stands at N242.2bn.

A breakdown of the sum approved for the security agencies showed that the Nigerian Police Force got N27.341bn; the Department of State Security (DSS), ‎N10.213bn; Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), N9.481bn; the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), N3.573 and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), N2.628bn.

Just like the component of the elections budget approved for INEC, the Senate said that of the security agencies would also come from the Service Wide Votes (SWV).

A further breakdown showed that the total amount approved for INEC and the security agencies under the 2018 appropriation for both their annual statutory budgets and the elections funds stand at N831.259bn.

‎Meanwhile, the Senate confirmed the appointments of Sen Abba Aji and Mohammed Sagir as members (non-legal) of the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC).

The confirmation followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, headed by Sen David Umaru (APC, Niger).
