APC Primaries: APC clears Victor Ochei, Ogboru, Pat, disqualified Mama Taraba, Shittu and others from Governorship election.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has refused to clear the Minister of Communications Adebayo Shittu and his Women Affairs counterpart Senator Aisha Jummai Alhassan to take part in the party’s governorship primaries in 29 states.

Adebayo, a governorship aspirant in Oyo State, was not cleared for not having a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate. But no reason was advanced for the non-clearance of Alhassan, who is interested in becoming Taraba State governor. The two were not available for immediate comment.

Others not cleared by the APC included Ibrahim Mohammed Mera who is challenging Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, Danladi Halilu from Nasarawa State, Abubakar Mamma Maaji from Niger State and Barr. Ejikeme Ugwu from Enugu State.

Ibrahim Bomai from Yobe State withdrew from the race.

The primaries, earlier scheduled to hold Saturday, September 29 were shifted to Sunday, according to a statement by the acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena.

The presidential primary will however hold today, and about 16 million members of the APC in over 8,000 wards across the country will participate in the exercise which will decide on President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the party’s sole candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

National Chairman of the party, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, had on Wednesday, September 12 while presenting membership card to President Muhammadu Buhari, said the APC under his leadership took advantage of modern technology to come up with a new membership data base of 15.6 million members.

Direct primaries entail all card carrying members of the party to take part in selecting candidates for various offices.

Kano, Kaduna and Kwara states were missing in the statement earlier issued by Nabena on the governorship primaries. While Nasiru el-Rufai is the only aspirant in Kaduna State and Abdullahi Ganduje the only aspirant in Kano, Kwara has 13 aspirants who have bought forms.

It is believed that the primaries would receive serious attention in states where incumbents are being challenged such as Bauchi, Adamawa, Katsina and Jigawa’ as well as in states where second term governors were trying to determine their successors.

Some of the states include Zamfara, Ogun, Oyo and Imo.
