Zenith Bank has fired an executive director, Sola Oladipo a
year after some top managers of the top-tier bank went to Government House to
kneel and beg Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose, according to CKN News, an online blog.
It is not clear if the incident was a contributory factor in Oladipo’s layoff.
Oladipo had on 23 June 2016 led two zonal directors of the bank and the
Ado-Ekiti branch manager to Fayose to remonstrate over the poor treatment
Fayose reportedly suffered at one of its branches. At the time, the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission had accused the Governor of using funds
obtained from the office of the former National Security Adviser,
Sambo Dasuki
to bankroll his 2015 governorship campaign. While Governor Fayose was having a
chat with the bank delegation, the press was ushered into the room, where they
captured the executives begging the governor on their knees; the pictures of
the exchange made national headlines and went viral on social media, causing
the bank a huge embarrassment.
The CKN News report said the “unwholesome
episode … lingered till today” and cited an unnamed ‘reliable’ source as saying
that Oladipo was eased out of the lender last week. If true, this will
represent a dramatic fall from grace for Oladipo, who is said to have been
promoted into his new role only in 2015. Mr Oladipo from what CKN News gathered
was one of the two Executive Directors of the Bank appointed about two years
ago and no one was expecting such a drop. The bank is yet to respond to calls
for comment.
