UNIDENTIFIED hoodlums in the early hours of Monday invaded a
community bank at Ughelli, Delta State killing a security guard on duty and
carting away a computer and other items from the bank.
The remains of the victim, Andrew Okurude, 78, was said to
have been recovered close to a plaza gate where the bank is situated. The
incident is coming just as another gang of hoodlums, on Monday evening, shot
dead a male guest lodging at a hotel located near Aroh road junction along the
East-West road. The lovely and peaceful town now become the den of hoodlums and terrors.
Both attacks occurred despite series of security check
points by combined teams of police and operatives of the Vigilante Group of
Nigeria, VGN at various parts of Ughelli who have been embarking on stop and
search operations in the town. Speaking to Vanguard on the incident, Chief
Executive Officer of the bank, Chief Joe Arausi, said: “I am not in Delta State
as at the moment and don’t have full details of the incident but the Managing
Director, called me on Monday that a security guard at the bank was killed.”
Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police,
Mr. Zanna Ibrahim explained that the victim had been reported missing by
members of his family who in an earlier report, stated that he left his house
on June 22 and has since not returned.
According to the police boss: “Based on the report, his
(victim) place of work at the bank was visited where he was found dead by the
gate of the plaza. “It is assumed that the victim died four days ago as at the
time of the visit, his corpse which has been deposited at the Central hospital
mortuary, Ughelli for autopsy, had already started decomposing. “While
investigation was ongoing to ascertain the course of death, the manager of the
bank came to the station and reported that hoodlums entered their office and
made away with their computer and that no money was taken.”
